Bought an Etec 115 HO last year.  Engine works great except for what I'd describe as a rhythmetic sound coming from it.  Its like a wobbling or winding sound that appears at cruising speed around 4k RPM and higher.  Below that I can't hear it.  I did not notice it at the beginning; only during the last 5 or 6 outings.  It may have been there day one but I didn't notice it then.  Looking at the engine when this sound emits, it is not shaking.  My prop has no bends or breaks in it.  The boat rides real smooth.   My concern is possible bad bearings somewhere or a sign of bad things to come.

Here is a recording of the sound taken on my Iphone.  Hope you can hear it.  Anyone have any ideas?

Nope.  Not hearing.  It asks me to "sign in" to dropbox.  No account and my info is already 'out there' more than I'd like.

Can not hear it either. if you are worry do compression and leak down test and see what the gearlube looks like. What is your WOT RPM too?

Sorry about that guys.  Please try the link again,  I made the file a "shared" file so you should be able to play it now.

Worked this time and to my ears no sounds of faulty bearings and all engines will have a certain harmonics at certain RPM's. Strange if you say it has just started to happen so check mounting bolts for correct torque, what hull is it on and does it have a backing board and is the WOT RPM close to 6K RPM. You could try to "play" with the TPS calibration to see if any affect happens then but you will want to be confident in your skill level to perform this "adjustment". If you have Ev daig and at this RPM you could try a drop test to see what affect that has too.

I just bought a new 115 HO also. I came from a 90 hp. It does have a different sound to it. At higher mid range Rpms. I think that's just the way the motor sounds. It took me I bit to get used to it.
Just hammer down, then it sounds like a rude again.

Now that's interesting; I went from a 90 to a 115 HO also.  Anyway, I've scheduled an appointment with my authorized Rude dealer to check it out.  He doesn't recognize the sound in the recording either so it may just be me making something out of nothing.

So, I took it to my ETec dealer and the good news: nothing to worry about; it's just the noise that engine makes. He said something about at higher RPMs something inside having to do with the exhaust kicks in an that could be the noise I'm hearing. Not sure what he means. Said others have mentioned similar sounds from their engines too. Good news - run it! In fact he said I'm not running her hard enough; although I don't know he he knows that.

Amazing; he was able to tell me on so and So date at such and such time I over heated and hot horn came one. Wow, cool. I remember that . Something hung up on lower unit but then floated away - nothing to do with that winding sound. But I got the geeen light to open her up??

One thing though, that fishing line tangled up on the prop shaft that wrecked the seals allowing water in the gear case was not covered under warrantee, dang it! 😃.

👍

"He said something about at higher RPMs something inside having to do with the exhaust kicks in an that could be the noise I'm hearing." All V4s have an exhaust valve which operates above 4500 rpm. You can hear it kick in and feel the power boost. When you hear it be happy - it means the valve is working as it should [smile]
