Greetings, I’d like to learn how and specifically what I need to buy, in order to do my own read outs? 2005 225 Etec. Two years ago a buddy and I rebuilt the power head and since it’s seems OK however I starting to sense some roughness and maybe a little vibration. Would the seating of the lower unit (I sometimes see exhaust coming out the sides). Would a printout show problems like this?

Most any laptop, etc. running Windows is OK.  Buy the EV Diag and connection cable from Barnacle Bill's - Tue thru Sat - 856-785-9455

Get a Genuine Service Manual when you call, with Model Number and Serial Number off the motor plate.

Many other things could be "roughness", and many of them won't show any codes via EV Diag.  Your exhaust housings and gaskets wouldn't show anything, but it would be great to know what else may be going on that Does show.

I'd be saving my allowance to get it.  [wink]  A bit Pricey? Yes, but...  think of one or two trips to the dealer for "help".  If you rebuilt the powerhead, you're surely capable of most anything that may be needed to be done.

My first purchases after getting my "used" motor were EV Diag and cable, genuine Service Manual, and a Parts Manual.  They more than pay for themselves - codes, temp profiles, Drop and Enrichment tests, winterization, Monitor page - the list goes on and on.  The Service Manual has "step by step" diagnosis, dis-assembly, re-assembly, along with correct torques and sealants, etc. for everything on your engine.

Plan B is your nearest evinrude dealer. Perhaps they will do it for only a half-hour of labor (for a 5 minute task).

Plan B for a "one time" or "infrequently" is quite OK!  [smile]  Meanwhile, I think about chasing a dealer for an appointment, hitching up, driving over, wait a bit, drive home, unhitch.  All that is in addition to whatever $$$ you left at the dealer.  I have heard that some won't even take you unless the boat is sitting there "in line", and most likely a 1 hour minimum.  Oh, leave it for 2 or 3 or more weeks, and then come back to get it?  What about all these codes that we found?

How about grab the laptop and cable, walk out in the yard and hook it up?  That's approaching Priceless to me.  [biggrin]

Just being "devil's advocate" here...  avoid all that if you can!  That is, unless your friendly dealer will run out to the boat when in his yard, and just do it when you show up for the 1/2 hour price.

Re cost of genuine Evinrude Diagnostics. Just some FYI
If $500 seems expensive check out the M.E.D.S. package for BRP which is around $1500.

EV diagnostics can only read electrical signals. It can show system voltages, kill cylinders for a power balance test, show diagnostic codes, etc.
It cannot "see" mechanical problems such as low compression, a mechanically stuck injector or fuel pump. It cannot help to find water in fuel or any mechanical assembly problems.
