Hello I have a problem with my 2005 Evinrude 90hp etec. I took my boat out at a high elevation lake and it was giving me issues with the smell of gas at throttle and would not go over 10mph all 3 days I was there. The boat never shut off and ran but never over 10mph. The boat ran perfectly fine prior to taking it up and last time I used the boat and that was about 1 1/2 months ago. My prime bulb was not holding full and had to pump it every time I started my boat, or or could it be a fuel pump issue? My engine had the yearly maintenance done at a local shop back in April and only has 52hrs, it was put on the laptop and showed no codes, also the compression was 130 across. I called the mechanic that did the work and of coarse he wants me to bring it in but I wanted to ask you guys your thoughts on the issue before I take it in. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

So the shop called today and he was saying that when he hooked it up to the lap top it was showing a oil pulse code. He cleared it and it went on again and he’s thinking gnits the fuel lift pump or oil pump. Would there be any leaking or oil or gas around the bottom cowling if that was the case? Missing oil pulses sound like a internal issue with the pump? Also he noticed that my battery was at 11v and was wondering if the stator went bad after testing the stator he said it was good but he couldn’t figure out why the battery was not fully charged seeing that it was a newer battery. What do you guys think of the non certified etec saying it could be the oil pump?

I have the 2004 90hp etec. At cold weather when my boat has been sitting for some time, I always winterize at dock before restarting and taking of. This to prevent the faulty no oil pulses that some times has resulted in no oil alarm and safe mode.
I3 models before 2007 have an older pump unit which can cause these faults due to a not sensitive enough measuring method. There is a new pump unit (together with a software) available to fix this, but my way is cheaper.

Yes, I run XD-100 at TCW3 setting.

How do I winterize at the dock? What are the steps? What’s price range on a new pump and software update?

The only “issue” I see in this thread is the OP does not trust the mechanic he has hired and wants readers to second-guess the mechanic.

All the rest of the problems or malfunctions or defects are not “issues” because there is no argument about them, that is:

—if the engine goes into S.A.F.E. Mode the RPM will be limited: no argument about that;

—if the fuel line primer bulb won’t get firm there is a defect in the fuel system: no argument about that;

—if the battery is not being maintained at full charge there is a defect in the electrical system: no argument about that.

In order to get a remedy for these defects you will have to either hire a competent mechanic or become trained and skilled to provide your own remedy yourself.

If the OP works with an authorized Evinrude dealer with factory trained and certified technicians, and if any of the defects are due to a defect in the original manufacture of the engine, and the engine is still in the warranty period, I would expect the remedy to be provided under the terms of the warranty.

Since the engine is 14-years-old and out of warranty, it will be unlikely that the repair of any defects will be under the warranty coverage and most likely not due to any defect in original manufacture but more from age, wear, and use.

To learn about operating your E-TEC engine—such as putting the engine into the winterize mode—I recommend you read the “Operating Guide” from Evinrude for your engine. The literature from Evinrude is very well written and explains basic operation—such as how to initiate the storage mode. Rather than paraphrase or try to recreate the procedure here in this discussion, I recommend you read the Operating Guide’s explanation.

The MSRP for parts for E-TEC engines can be found online at the excellent Evinrude website:

Shop2.evinrude.com

Rather than ask here in the forum for prices for parts you might want to buy, you can look up the prices yourself.

I don’t take responsibility for the content of the Evinrude website.

The website I directed you to has ALWAYS provided good information. If you don’t find it useful then feel free to ignore my advice. If you think I have given you bad advice that is fine with me, as I do not have any obligation to satisfy your particular demands for information. I will end my participation in trying to help you.

Your engine is a 2006 model (SD) and I just went to the website Jim mentioned and your engine comes up fine.

Oh okay, I always thought it was a 2005 since the boat is a 2005. I just checked it and it does have my motor under a 2006. Thanks helping me out instead of telling me go check my owners manual like some people on here. I came on this site to get owners feedback on the type of motor I have and if they have ever had a similar problem and what they did to get it fixed. Instead I get people like JIM telling me all this basic, common sense stuff that I already know. But thanks for helping

How did you help me all you did was tell my things I already know, all common sense, basic way of thinking. I came on here to ask people that know the motor and have had the same issues that I have try to help me. All you did was say read a manual and gave me a website for buying parts In which I have no idea what part I need. I didn’t come on here to hear people say get a manual and figure it out. Also I didn’t want to drive a total of 4 hrs to take my boat to a certified etec mechanic so instead I took it to a shop that has a etec software to hook the motor up to lap top and let me know what codes are coming up. The shop is not certified for etech motors so for me to trust them 100% it’s kind a hard that’s why I’m reaching out to etec owners group. But thanks for the basic, common sense knowledge

It is pretty hard for anyone to offer advise without being able to touch your engine. As per earlier best to get an edf (history report) from the person you took it too and post on here so that we can see what code is listed. There is an in line oil update for earlier model engines like yours so I hope if this person opens up his shop and takes in engines and charges people to fix the engine knows a thing or two. Ask him if he has done this software update, check the oil pump operation, if he is saying it is oil related, via Ev diag5-all easy to do and checked the integrity of the oil hoses in the oil pump and make sure it is not sucking air.

I scrolled back up a bit.
A low battery voltage reading could be due to a discharged battery for a reason not related to the engine. Due to the way I use my personal boat I have a lot of experience watching the volt meter. If my battery is low when I crank the boat in the morning, then it will take a few hours of running time around 1600 rpm to bring the voltage up.
With your engine running in s.a.f.e. mode due to the no oil code, there would be very little charging out put.
Most of the time the fix for a no oil code on the early inline engines is to replace the oil pump and tank. Yours with low hours may be efit from removing the pump, spraying the pick up screen with brake cleaner, cleaning the tank and filling with fresh XD-100.
