Thanks again Gotsea. Will look into getting the program. Recently retired on fixed income after 46 years driving truck. Spent good part of savings upgrading from a 1987 Evinrude 120 hp to the 2012 E-Tec 90hp. It was too sweet to pass up.  5000$ Canadian for a motor with only 50 hours and still on warranty if anything not kosher. So just trying to get it working right on boat. Am going to spend today on checking throttle adjustment settings and raising the motor a notch on transom. It is currently on second notch from top with AV plate not much higher than the bottom of a v bottom. Have no one at this time to steer boat while I observe AV plate so will change height for something to do till my brother comes visiting in a week

For heck of it am showing picture of google image Great Slave Lake in NWT in Northern Canada. Yellow pins are where I have fished and where I want to return. Huge lake trout in cold waters in I think 2nd deepest lake in North America. Google it. Put boat in Yellowknife and 150 miles to Lutselk'e  where gas and supplies available. You tube video's of people doing it. AWSOME !! 20180928_111245_resized_3.jpg  [biggrin]

welcome to EOG, kenk

Really need to do Oly's basics first. Requires service manual

1. Compression and leakdown tests on motor.  Mandatory on unknown used motors.

2. Fuel pressures, lift and high pressure rail pump.  Vacuum test and air leak bubbles on boat fuel system tank > motor.  Fuel pressure and vacuum gauge. Clear section of substitution fuel hose.
Must be done on the water at speed with motor under load.

3. Check spark to plugs and pulses to injectors with induction timing light for pulse brightness and consistency.  On water test under load.

All tests documented in the E. Service manual which you can order from Joe's parts helper at BBs top of page.

Also need the E. Installation manual for your motor available on this forum for installation requirements and tests.

here's a link to a similar Alumcraft weight and length as yours with 90 E-TEC for what you should expect performance wise.  With a 15P Viper stainless steel BRP prop, a bow lift design, which will get the best WOT speed.  BRP SSP 15P will give better mpg fuel economy and similar top speed for those long runs you have to deal with on that huge lake.  BRP Rogue 13P 4 blade will give the best mpg fuel economy, hole shot and trolling low speed control in the wind.

https://www.evinrude.com/content/dam/evinrude/Global/Performance-reports/Alumacraft/90-HP-E-TEC-Alumacraft/926-E-TEC-90-HP-Alumacraft-Competitor-165-Sport-LC.pdf

Your boat motor is not reaching those numbers of that Alumacraft and 90.  Try raising the motor 2 holes, easy to do for 1 guy using crank trailer hitch, board under motor skeg, loosening slider bolts on motor and removing the not sliders.  Retest for WOT and handling.

Really need the E. Diagnostics software that far from a dealer service shop.
Those long distances by boat on fishing trips, I'd be set up with the diagnostics software and cable on a pc in a water proof bag along with basic spare parts such as plugs, fuel filters in sealed bags, grease, gear case lube.  Or instead of carrying pc with software, install a NMEA2000 interface cable and network to one of the newer E-TEC electronic gauges that display engine codes along with engine parameters.  MFD digital multi function display with NMEA2000 interface that will display E-TEC codes also works well plug one has important GPS.

If your boat has foam flotation under the deck, take it across the scales for weight.  those old 120/140hp Evinrude/Johnson V4 loopers where tough strong motors, 120hp haw more like 140 at the prop when tuned right.  Would make a large concrete block plane on top of the water if it had a motor mount on it.  Loved to fly WOT.  Used to race them

 RE: Steelhead
Just got in from raising motor 1 notch and heading to lake to try it out. Try 2 if not big enough difference. Would have done 2 if I had read this first !!   LOL
Plus according to service manual the throttle at idle was not resting at stop per instructions. Reset to specs ( I think LOL )
As far as going that far in the north in a boat. LOL  Went with a V4 90 Evinrude and another time with  115 Evinrude. One from 70's and other from mid 8o's. LOVED those old V4's. Really reliable and tough. AND went with spare everything but never needed any of it. Plus a SPOT messenger. Next time will get Sat phone. So beautiful up there.
