With all the plastic bag/debris in tourist waters in AZ and vegetation, I would definitely put on a water pressure sensor on your E-TEC.  Easy to do, especially if you have digital gauges already such as the ICON-Pro or a MFD that displays E-TEC PIDS motor parameters from the EMM on the NMEA2000 bus.

Also large water temperature variations going from spring into late summer, water temps 100d F+.  AFTER changing WP impeller complete kit>lots of cup O ring damage from sand beachings, change the PRV spring to the lighter pressure option spring.  Increases water cooling flow at lower rpms.

So there's only one service center in all if phoenix Az that works on E-TEC's. $650.00 4 weeks out and here's the good part... I have to bring it down there to "Get in line" and let it sit and bake in the sun for 4 weeks so they say. Probably more like 6 weeks. THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! I garage my boat when not in use. What did I get myself into with this E-TEC Evinrude! [eek]

If you came here to cry, get gone.  If you want help, buy a service manual and get to wrenching!

++ to Olypopper!  There is another guy on here who does "Lurk" around Phoenix at times, and maybe he can point you to some extra help if you need it.  IF he reads this thread.

I have a hard time believing that the boat has to "be there" to be in line?  A small deposit (if that) won't hold your place while you wait?

4 weeks is nothing, we have 5 E-TEC shops in 1 hour driving distance.  All multibrand, all booked out 6 weeks or more.
The busy season.  Some aren't even taking bookings, many bookings don't show up, throw the hell out of their work schedule.
Get that Suckzuki here and it's 6 weeks wait.

Get a cover and park in line, or get the Service manual and DIY.  We'll help you but we don't take whiners.

1 day or less to install after ordering the Servie manual parts and sealers needed from BB at top of page on fast ship and you're on the water

What Oly and SH said above, water pump kit put in by Service manual and kit instructions.

Hi Cliffman,
No doubt you’ve now noticed comments such as “What did I get myself into with this E-TEC Evinrude! “ aren’t well received. All that’s required to fix your over heat problem is a water pump kit and do a service while you’re at it.
As the techs have said they’re prepared to help you do this. Also appreciate that these guys are all top techs for whose time and expertise you would normally pay around $80 per hour and you are getting it on here for free. All brands of outboards require maintenance / service and the water pump is a normal service item because they wear out just like the brake linings of you car.
You can’t blame the service wait time on the brand of an outboard. As the guys have said if you don’t want to wait then DIY and they’ll help you.
Every time I get stressed over something I remind myself that the definition of stress is “ One’s inability to cope with the difference between how things really are and the way you want them to be”

FYI the correct way to say “Good day Mate” in Australia is “Gidday mate” LOL
Cheers

So what is so special about this E-TEC that there's only one service center in all of phoenix that will service this unit. I will say that I'm very impressed with the performance of this 150 so far. Also, I edited my response regarding when the overheating alarm happened. My son had to remind me that it did happen one other time when we first got the boat. Think it was our 3 outing. We were full throttle for about 10 minutes and trimmed up about 15% Then pulled back to 1/4 throttle and forgot to lower the trim. Shortly thereafter the alarm went off. Cut the throttle, lowered the trim, the alarm went off and that was the end of it for the rest of the outing. We dismissed it thinking it was trimmed too high for what speed we were going. I also forgot to mention that my boat is a Tri-toon. Does anyone think that having the center toon might be deflecting that water and creating an air pocket around the water intake?

What we think about your boat is all guessing based on the info you share. As mentioned, get a service manual and some basic tools like a pressure gauge and figure out what is going on in your cooling system. If you have basic mechanical skills you’ll have this problem sorted out in a weekend.

As Olypopper says - pretty much guessing via keyboard.

There are some "diagnostics" and software that are Special.  Joe Shmoe at the marina may have wrenched on 4,000 outboards, but never touched an ETEC.  Oh no, I ain't goin' there!  He's heard about a few of the Special things, but it's still not Magic.  He just doesn't care to learn a bit extra, and maybe there aren't enough ETEC's around to justify the time.

As far as the Triples, I don't think that's the problem.  My toon always had the "problem" of those twin wakes meeting at the motor.  I can't tell what's going on back there due to the spray, etc.  Raised the motor 2 holes, added the High Flow intakes and saw NO noticeable difference in water pressure, rpm's or boat speed.  There weren't any 'problems', but just trying to see what would happen.  Not much...

Guessing your problem isn't with the extra tube, unless you're way too high.  Not many 'toon guys on here, so thought I'd chime in on that.

Patience, and best!

Phil
