2016 Model year. Cruising at about half throttle trimmed up about 5%, my over heating alarm goes off. Motor goes in the limp mode. Doesn't happen when I'm trimmed all the way down. I had 11 people on board and by my estimate I was about 200 LBS over the boat's stamped limit. Strapped the water ears to check the water pump output. Here's a video of that test. https://youtu.be/UkJlxF8Mvps

You cannot troubleshoot a cooling system problem on a flusher, it has to be done in the water.

Did this just start overheating or has it been doing this for quite  a while?  A 2016 built motor is due for at least its 3 year servicing even if it has less than 300 hours on it. That includes water pump kit and thermostat possible replacement and pressure release valve inspection among all the other service procedures.

Last time out was the second time I've experienced the overheating alarm. The first time was soon after I purchased it. I was only about 1/2 throttle and trimmed up about 15%. Figured it was due to being trimmed up and going slow. I'm in Queen Creek, Az. Do you know of a good service center?

Thanks! I would like to do this myself if it's not too difficult. Is there a video and a kit that I can purchase?

Hi Cliffman
300 hr / 3 year service requirements
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_ySWvnClzuXNWJrblQteDNmSGM/edit?usp=docslist_api&filetype=msword
Order your Genuine Evinrude Parts from Barnacle Bill's Marine Supply. (856) 785 9455 who is the owner of this great free site, (etecownersgroup) and who pays all it’s associated costs out of his own pocket.
Have you Engines Model and Serial Number (on the Engine ID plate) to hand when you order parts. Barnacle Bill can supply you the 300 hr 3 year service parts as a kit. Model and Serial Number ensures you are supplied the correct parts for your engine. (Year Model alone is not enough info when ordering parts.)
You will need a Repair and Service Manual which can also be bought from Barnacle Bills

Hi Cliffman,
I just realised the Service Video I posted doesn’t tell you a lot. I’ve down a search but haven’t found a decent Service Video. Maybe one of the other members can help with a Service Video.
There is an Inspection and Maintenance Schedule in the Service Manual.
Cheers

Youtube search on how to service an E-tec and this is what I found. WOW! Looks like I'm in for a ride.

Hopefully you have more brain pressure than that guy. Buys a 12 year old engine, fills the fuel system with “moisture” and is surprised he has problems. There are ALWAYS two sides to every story.

Hi Cliffman,
Listen to Olypopper’s advice as he’s a very knowledgeable and experienced E-TEC tech.

When searching the Internet for information you need to qualify the source of the information which can be difficult at times. Unfortunately there’s a lot of misinformation out there.
The Service and Repair Manual will guide you step by step through the Service. A “how to” Video while helpful isn’t necessary.
These two water pump service videos, from trusted sources, while for different E-TEC will give you an idea of the procedure. In particular pay attention to “shift shaft” height.

Hopefully for the 50 hours he ran it that he at least used the XD100 oil only as that is what the engine printout said the motor was programmed for.

I'm wondering what would happen if he bought a 12 year old Chevy with low milage, and after 500 miles "got moisture in the gas" and the car then started to run badly.

Would anyone expect General Motors to offer financial assistance, any warranty consideration, or send a rep out to fix the car for the dealership?

I feel badly for the guy as he spent a boat-load of money and the motor is not running as it should. Also, a dealer would be calling the owner and talk to him if the bill was going to be $6000, not just present it to him as a surprise.

Even high-end products such as Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, etc. have disgruntled customers who badmouth them or make videos saying what a rotten deal they have.

As Oly mentioned, there has to be more to the story. We only know what the owner wants us to know.

Thank you all for your comments and advise. After watching the vids I'm going to get some pricing on having it done. Then decide on whether or not to do it myself. Lots of good info on this site. Glad I found it! [smile] Oh, and by the way, the motor only has 32 hours on it.

Good eyes Nordmann!  I did watch, saw the very brief shots of the reports and invoices, and like most folks watched the guy whining  - probably sponsored by a competitor.  [wink]

EDIT:  I might be inclined to avoid the shops that he used, too.  [smile]
