Interesting little happening this morning.

I've had a quirky little intermittent fault with my engine basically since I purchased it. If running around at idle, it's fine. At higher revs, it's fine. If I want to troll or travel at a high idle - 6-8 knots, every so often the rpms would drop back to 500 (idle speed). When it does this, advancing the throttle doesn't result in anything apart from a weird sort of fluttering running sound - no rpm increase. To resume normal operation, the control needs to be returned to the neutral position and then you are good to go until next time - which may be straight away or may be in half an hour. I haven't invested too much into chasing it as it more an annoyance than a problem apart from when we want to troll.

Anyways - last week I installed a new Garmin MFD. First run was today. All data working well. I had my little fault present - at which time the Garmin unit alarms and tells me I have an unspecified fault - service immediately. There were and never have been any faults flagged by the I-command gauges and no historical faults ever appear on the computer in relation to this issue.

Any ideas??

Cheers

In the signature. Not sure why it didn't show. Been there a long while.

When viewing posts on my cell phone signatures do not show unless I switch to "full version view".

Same happens on any Android or Apple apps device, i.e Pad Tablet.
reduces repetitive data amount that has to be handled.

That likely explains why I did not see the signature info.  Sorry.

I'm not able to put my finger on the problem based upon the information provided.  If the engine is in a fault state (and it most likely is based upon the description), I would expect a historical fault to be indicated in EvDiag.

Sounds like you have access to EvDiag.  If so, hook it up to your motor and wait for the fault condition to occur.  When it does, look at the Monitor page and see if the Key On time has reset to zero.  Then look at active faults in EvDiag.  Do all this prior to shifting back to neutral.

It sounds to me to be a case of something causing an EMM reset.  When that occurs, the throttle is in a position which is out of idle range resulting in the EMM to not react to throttle input.

The Garmin would not have proper support for active faults so no surprise it doesn't provide a good description.  Fault code 11 (TPS out of idle range) does not show up on the I Command series instruments.  Fault 11 would be active during the scenario described if the EMM resets.

Thankyou Eldersparky. Yes, I run a PC based plotting program on the boat and have Evdiag as well with a permanently installed cable. I will make a point of running it with Evdiag until it faults next time I'm on the water.
