hey guys, I am pulling my hair out on this engine.  I work for the local sheriffs office and this motor is on one of our rescue boats and see's its fair share of abuse.  the current issue is the motor trips the overheat alarm and goes into limp mode on WOT.  you can cruise around all day at 1/2-3/4 throttle but after around 30sec. of it going wide open it sounds the alarm.  I have checked the impeller and it seems to be in good condition, the thermostat looks like its working and when its running there is water coming out of the tell-tale.  the temp sensor has been replaced and still it has the same issue. we took it to the local shop and they think sand has gotten lodged in the head somewhere and causing it to overheat.  I pulled the t-stat and ran water through the head and its coming out next to the exhaust so I have a hard time believing it clogged.  the pressure relief valve seems to be in good condition though i'm not sure how much pressure it should take to fully open it.  Does anyone have any other ideas of what could be happening with this motor?

Without even knowing year model or service history you will need to confirm the WP readings are withing spec and anytime any engine is overheating the best thing to do if fit correctly a complete genuine water pump kit, it is the source of the cooling water, and make sure the o-ring is not fitted in between the cup and housing on this I-2 if it is an early model outboard.

It helps in at least knowing what engine you are talking about, my crystal ball is in the shop at present. Get the WP readings and it takes less than an hour to fit a water pump kit and pay attention to that o-ring I mentioned.

Good catch by Don and my bet will be that the o-ring I speak of is fitted between cup and housing.

Usually not too big of a problem, as 'many' parts/motors are often similar.  BUT, as you see, the Experts Know!  (And, I'm no sort of expert).

Call BB's, and get the 'correct' manual for your motor.
