So I just got my motor fixed. 2 scored cylinders. I had the existing head bored out and 2 oversized pistons put in. Mechanic reset the computer so it knows its break in. Is there a break in process for this? The mechanic acted wishy washy with it which told me he pretty much didn’t know. Anyway its a 2006 60 hp etec. Again, its NOT a new head. Help!!!

Rule #1 of this forum, post model and serial number.

If the mechanic doesn't know about break in, cross your fingers.  What type of pistons did he use?  Did he use factory or aftermarket parts?

Ferena45,

If the mechanical tech (?) you mentioned properly (?) "reset" the EMM as you've stated, that should be all that needs to be done. The "brains" of the software should automatically "think" this is a brand new engine... and in so doing, double oil the rebuilt block (not head) as if it were straight from the factory!

From your post wording, it sounds like this person is either a poor / lazy communicator or less than a proficient "switched on" platinum dealer??? He should have been more than willing to explain what I've said in the above paragraph. Given the lack or unwillingness of this very straight forward & direct customer information... I would be suspect of their abilities! And, possible lack of commitment to customer satisfaction focus! Henceforth... I would be seeking to establish a new dealer relationship ASAP!

But, this is just me! I expect full and willingly open, cordially toned & respectful treatment from businesses I chose to honor with my hard earned highly inflated dollars!!! Okay, you might call me an "onary cuss"! But, I don't appreciate less than this from people I give my money to. I don't get a "warm and fuzzy" trustful feeling when being treated as if I'm a nuisance and not worthy of someone's time to explain the details of what I'm paying for! Or, lack of apparent knowledge.

One last thing. I know Evinrede's factory boron nitrate honing process plus NASALOY material used for cylinder sleeves... contributes to the "run it as hard as you like right out of the box" advertising slogan. But, unless this rebuild was factory... I would be taking it easy with full throttle for the first few hours use!!! I would be thinking about breaking it in more like one would do with a conventional "4 joke" (stroke) outboard! Just to play it safe for satisfactory long term continued service out of the freshly rebuilt powerhead!!! To my mind, this advice is what your dealer probably should have recommended to you... "that you play it safe... just because"!!!

Also, I hope they found and corrected the reason for the scored cylinders in the first place!!! Lack of oil, overheating, fuel delivery problems etc.!!!

Well, I live in Indiana where there is NO, and I STRESS NO, good places to take your Evinrude to get fixed. The guy I took it too was apparently “the man” in this crappy state. That was coming from 2 evinrude reps. Unfortunately when she dies I’ll have to switch motors, b/c there are no good service places. They act like you have the plague when you say etec.

So do you think I could call an Evinrude direct Tech and get a firm answer?

If you don't know whether OEM pistons were used and very likely no Boron Nitrate honing done, treat it like a normal brake-in.

Don't labour the engine on half plane, overload boat and vary RPM during the first few hour.

No additional oil required, if mixed in fuel will just burn. EMM will provide double oiling over 2000RPM for 2 hours.

Lots of Evinrude dealers in IN and surrounding states, don't know what part of the state you're in.

Follow the guys advice above.  They are the best, as good as you'll get from E. support if you get to talk to anyone there about a rebuild.

With all the unknowns you're dealing with on the rebuild, here's a detailed step by step to follow.  Been used for decades since the early days of outboard and all the old Evinrude carb'd motors before all the high tech alloys and machining.

New water pump kit mandatory.

Best to have a temperature gauge and water pressure gauge or run with the cowling off first few hours to watch for signs of overheat.

Your expert did leave you hanging.
