Hey Folks, I have a 2008 E tec 60HP with a jet foot. I purchased it last year and had new fuel lines, new filter, and a new sierra primer bulb installed. recently while driving, the motor will run out of gas. whats happening is the VST tank is running empty. the system is not drawing fuel into the VST. Then I have to pump the bulb 7 or 8 times until the VST float stops the fuel and the bulb gets hard. once this is done the engine runs perfectly from idle to full throttle until the VST tank runs dry again or I pump the bulb every few minutes. the bulb feels normal when I pump it. it feels like only fuel is being pumped. the bulb never deflates it keeps its normal integrity. My closest reputable e tec service tech is 100 miles away so im trying to troubleshoot this myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sure sounds like your lift pump.  All sorts of little rubber diaphragms, seals and check valves inside there that at 12+ years old don't want to play nice any more.

You "may" be able to get a rebuilt kit with all those rubber parts.  Otherwise a new lift pump.

A quick check on the pump output volume and pressure may tell more.

Riverplayer, One red flag in your post " a new sierra primer bulb installed." Not saying this type of primer bulb is the problem, however, some aftermarket bulbs don't have a check valve were is the OMC J/Rude does have one. And it is recommended to have a check valve.

Would a primer bulb work if it doesn't have a check valve? if it doesn't I think it will push fuel back and forth without some source of check valve, in effect for it to work it has to have 2 check valves otherwise it will simply not work, the check valves in all prime bulbs that I am aware of have a ball and a spring to close, and that is the reason they work in any position horizontal or vertical last position is preferred.

Not sure where you're getting a genuine EV rebuild kit for $40?  Buyer beware!  From memory, mine was about $65 and the new lift pump was like $170 about 3 or maybe 4 years ago.

For the most part the "metal" parts don't wear unless cracked etc. so I went with the kit.  A bit of care is a good thing especially on the check valves, if your lift pump is like mine.  They are "one time" install so watch orientation etc.  Taking pics and notes during disassembly may be helpful.  These pro's do it in their sleep in probably 10 minutes, but a first timer like me was going pretty slow and careful.  [wink]

Hope it helps!
