I just bought a used boat with a 2006 60 hp ETEC on it.  The model number is E60DPLSDA and the serial number is 05135140.  I took the boat for a ride today and everything was fine.  I went back out a hour later and the boat would not go into reverse.  There wasn't any grinding or clunking it just wouldn't go into reverse.  Any ideas what I should check out?

The first step is to see if the problem is in the engine, controls or cables. Remove the engine cover and watch the shift linkage while shifting. See if you have full travel in forward and reverse without the engine running. You’ll need to make sure the prop shaft is being turned while trying to shift. If you cannot shift via the controls then disconnect the shift cable at the engine and see if you can shift manually.
