Hi All,
This is a question that came up yesterday, I have a friend building a 50ft cat that is designed as a sailing/powercat,It is built super light (for the size ) with all the latest materials  He is tossing the idea of putting 2 200 hp outboards on it instead of the usual big heavy diesels ,gearboxes, running gear etc.I suggested two G2s as they simplify steering, docking with idock ,etc.Have Awesome fuel economy and low service requirements  He has been told that commercial operators are getting 4000 plus hours out of a 4 stroke outboards , Any ideas on the design life of a G2? (i understand there are many variables how its used etc , but any advice would be appreciated)

Simple facts are not every commercial engine will get to that sort of hours, some do and some do not of any brand or technology. i have seen E-TEC with higher hours than what he is being told and if fact there is one here over that. There is only one technology right here today that has proven itself to last high hours and many years and that is the 2-Stroke platform. I will be surprised if we see alot of 30 year old 4-Strokes down the track.

Now fitting out this boat, anyone else's 200HP being only 4 cylinder things will not offer the performance of the G2, even more so if he is thinking of the HO's. All this plus what you have said about inbuilt DPS, the new cost effective i-Dock and putting out alot less CO which is not good for us humans.

Thanks Huey,
I thought the 2 strokes would offer longer hour service/Design Life , as its continual new oil used for lubrication, but thought i would ask the question .
