After running the engine for about an hour one day, I was trolling at low speed and the engine just died without any hesitation or signs of issues.  It would crank, but wouldn't even try to start after it died.

After I got it back home, I checked to see if there was spark using a spark tester and there is none.

Any ideas where to start with this one?

Spark testers will damage an EMM, when checking for spark use a timing light.

Best thing to do would be to obtain the diagnostic software and do a static test of the ignition system.

2008 model. As Evan wrote: no spark tester. They can damage a healthy EMM.

More information is required to give an opinion. You may need to get your dealer to check for service codes if you don't have the Evinrude Diagnostic program.

So when I do a static ignition test with the software, is anything supposed to actually happen other than just the timer going down?  All the other tests I can physically see or hear something happening, but with the static ignition test it just counts down from 30 seconds on the screen and I don't actually see or hear anything happening.

The selected ignition coil should fire about once per second while test is running

So when I run the Ignition test on the diagnostic software by enabling any of the 6, a screen pops up with "Ignition test cylinder __ is running."  There is nothing firing during the 30 second count down.

The fuel injectors test, peripherals test, etc all work.

That would imply then that none of the six ignition coils are creating a spark.  You were using a timing light to verify this lack of spark.  Correct?

Have you created a diagnostic report?  Post it for us to take a look.

Not sure this is the correct report.  I didn't see a different report I could run.

As I recall, 2008 is the older CD ignition system. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. The common denominator of all 6 ignition coils not firing would be the CD electronics.

You need to answer Elder's first question about the spark and timing light. Also once you get it going it has been lugging its whole life so best to perhaps re-prop or raise the engine to get the WOT ROM around 5600RPm for the best chance of a long mechanical life.

w164, to clarify what the experts are saying is that you have to have an induction timing light connected to the sparkplug wire your are sending the signal via EvDiag to see the light come on because you won't hear or see any reaction other than the light
