I bought a cable from that guy in Canada (Princecraft Evinrude) on ebay, and tried to hook it up this morning, and the 3 pin plug will not fit the motor female.
The cable connector is very crudely made and the pins have their wires soldered down their outside making them much to big to fit the motor plug.  It looks like a first grader made these connections.
Has anybody else had this trouble?  Now that I see it is so simple, I guess I'll just make my own.  Bummed out for the delay.

Is that kind of "you get what you pay for?"

You are better off making your own. The schematic has been posted here before.

I give all the details of how to make the RS-232 to EMM cable in an article that has been available from

http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/002257.html

The Deutsch connectors are now also being made by a second source vendor, and the prices are much lower than when I bought them from a boutique supplier. You can now source the connectors from  NEWARK ELECTRONICS.

I have not developed the precise part numbers from Newark that would be needed. Here is a link where you could start browsing for the proper connectors. They barely cost a dollar each.

I complained to the vendor and this is the response I got this morning:

"you got the same problem as another customer , its the pins in your engine that are not compatible, the other customer use aligator wires between the engine and the cable, work perfeclty. let me know".

It seems like I'm not the only one.   Is it possible that Evinrude made two different size connectors for the diagnostics?
I measured the motor connector female holes and they will receive a .046" dia pin, 1/16" will not go.

BS! The same connector has been used on the FICHT & E-tec engines for years.  If as you say, the wires are soldered down the outside of the pins, then they were never going to fit without damaging the engine socket.  Send it back or put the cost down as school fees.

Somethings gone wrong somewhere, probbly as stated above. Bought mine awhile back from him and all worked a-ok. JimH has a good thread on how to make the cable, now you can make it however long you need it to be. JimH has also found another source for the connectors. Looks like a good weekend project to me..... Dave is correct, the connector has been used for years.

The proper Deutsch connectors can also be found on Ebay for about £4 ($5 ish)  As Thom says, making up the cable is a doddle if you can use a soldering iron.  The easiest way is to get a serial cable extension lead & cut off the female end & solder on the deutsch connector, that way you only have to make off one end.

BINGO !

Order one # 514686 Deutsch connector, three # 514679 pins, and a # 514682 wedge (pin retainer)  from your dealer to build the engine side of the cable, about $11 for the items needed.
