Guys,

I'm in Mackay and this weekend is about the best weather we have had this year.  I 'm dying to go fishing and I have had about 2 boas crews of people phoneing me to take them out.  Problem is, I was an idiot and didn't get any XD100 oil.  The tank (2 gallon I think) is about half full.  But my engine has been using a lot of oil in my opinion.  My engine is overpropped (other posts on here about that) and maybe it has been using extra oil because of the additional load.  Anyway, I have a new prop to try - it is an inch down in pitch so has to be an improvement.

Anyway, with ANZAC day, the BRP dealer here is shut today so I am stuck for XD100.  I may not need any, but I don't want to be left floating about in the ocean if I do run out of oil.  I can get TC-W3 no probs.  If I take a couple of litres of that for backup, will I be right?  Ie. would the engine be OK if programmed for XD100, if I had to use TC-W3 for an hour or so taking it easy?  Maybe 4000RPM?

Thanks

I am not qualified enough to give a definitive answer however all the advice and information I have read says you can't do this.
Running TC-W3 when your motor is programmed for XD100 risks damage.
My advice.  Drive around until you see an e-tec in someones yard and go ask.
Sling them a few extra bucks and I think you should be right.

Considering you can run an ETEC for 5 hours (all be at low speed) with no oil as the engine gets limited to 1200rpm

I would of thought limping home on TC-W3  under 1500/2000 rpm would be ok, but I understand your reservation.

If you stay under 5000 rpms you will use less oil in the first place

If you have 1 gallon in the tank at a concervative estimate of 1-50, limit your activites to 50 gallons of fuel would be the easy solution. This would equate to 10 hrs of mixed use on average

Guys,  just checked my manual and it states "if XD100 is temporarily unavailable a one time only use of an oil that meets TC-W3 is allowed".

So based on that I'm going for it!

I run 100% full synthetic in my 250 HO and feel pretty comfortable about it. It all mixes and the oil manufacturer warren ts its performance.

Just dont get into the habbit of doing this. From what we have seen it takes about 90 hours of running before damage is done. Just dont run wide open and take it easy on take off.

Also to use less oil keep your rpm's under 4000rpm, the oil ratio richen's up quiet a bit once you go over 4000rpm and you will suck down the XD100...

Guys,

Thanks for the concern.  Yes it was never going to be a regular occurrence, just a one off to get me home if needed.  Anyway, went out on the weekend and didn't run out of XD100 anyway.  So all is good.  Except for wrecking my brand new SS prop on its maiden voyage on a shitty little boat ramp surrounded by oyster shell infested bombies!  Another story...

Thanks

Chris

OK so here is my last XD100 question. I have been running on XD 50 for one year. From what I get out of this web site the best oil to use is XD100. I took the cover off one of my motors and there is a label on one of the hoses that says it is programmed for tcw3 or XD 50. It also states if I want to change over to XD 100, I should have my dealer make the change.

If I understand this ,If I stay on this setting I can change over to XD100 with no problem. I assume at this setting I will get more oil to the motor. As long as I don't go the other way ( at the XD100 setting use xd50 or other) I should be OK. Also can I mix XD 50 with XD 100 ? Thanks all

You are correct.

You can stay at the tcw3 setting and use XD100 oil.

Also, you can mix XD50 oil with XD100 oil, no problem.

Haha,, Yep I had the same mishap 3 weeks ago. Brand new Rebel was rooted after I hit the ramp with it while driving onto the trailer... lucky it was repairable....
