Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's

What oil should I use?
Evinrude XD-100 synthetic is the best all around oil for an E-TEC. XD-50 semi-synthetic is the next best.  If you want to use a different oil, it has to be TC-W3 certified. Other outboard manufacturer's oils are preferred over the aftermarket off-the-shelf oils.

Should I have the motor programmed for XD-100 oil?
The XD-100 reduced rate oil setting is for recreational use and the engine will consume less oil on most motors. You do have to continue using XD-100 oil continuously.

For high-performance or heavy duty commercial use, the TC-W3 setting is recommended.

Is it really 3yrs/300 hour service?
For normal recreational use in fresh water, the advertised scheduled service is fine.

In saltwater use, at least once a year, the lubrication of fittings and the propshaft are recommended.

For high-performance high-speed operation and in commercial duty, maintenance and inspections should be done more frequently.

How do I contact BRP or Evinrude Customer Service?
Call 847-689-7090 with your engine's serial number during normal business hours. Customers outside the USA and Canada should contact the regional office of their country's Evinrude (BRP) distributor.

How do I know if my motor needs a software update?
You will receive a letter from BRP or a call from your dealer for any important update. Other updates not considered critical and may only be needed if there is a specific issue. Your dealer can advise you on that.

How do I know I have the latest software update for my motor?
Your dealer can hook up his laptop and find out what software version is installed in your motor. Good dealers give their customers a printout of the engine report which has that data.

Visit this  site often to be kept up to date on tips, tricks, and technical help for your E-TEC.

Where can I order parts for my motor?
We recommend you establish a relationship with your local authorized dealer. Parts can be ordered from Barnacle Bill's, just click on the link, or go to http://www.shop.evinrude.com

Where can I get a parts diagram?
Go to http://www.shop.evinrude.com

Where can I buy a service manual?
See an authorized Evinrude dealer, or click on  Barnacle Bill's  link, or go to http://www.shop.evinrude.com

Can I obtain the software and cable needed to diagnose my E-TEC?
The diagnostic software CD and interface cable can be ordered from an authorized dealer. The latest CD covers the E-TEC motors and all the FICHT engines.
You will need a serial port on your laptop or a USB-to-serial port adapter kit to hook up the interface cable.

Will the FICHT diagnostic software work on my E-TEC?
Older FICHT software, such as version 1.42B, does NOT work for the E-TEC.

Do you answer FICHT and carbureted outboard questions too?
Not here, this is for E-TEC info only. Try http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zeroforum?id=51 for those kinds of questions.

How can I add more horsepower to to my engine ?
You can't, well, not easily anyway. Besides that the EPA has significant penalties for changing the emission outputs on a motor by modifying it. If you want to go faster, get a larger motor and/or a different boat.
