While installing a fuel gauge and nmea2k network to my boat i wanted to check the gauge was working.
My father turn the key without the safety lanyard on, he went past the on notch to the start and the motor started (out of water).
My understanding was the safety lanyard was needed to start the motor.

While out on the water we testing the safety lanyard for function. While running if you pull the safety lanyard off it cuts the engine, so works correctly there.
But if you start the motor without the lanyard it runs.
Is this normal?
Is the safety lanyard tied into the EMM and adds a condition when it is present while starting that if it is removed the engine with cut out?

Hi, yes that is normal and a good safety feature. Think about this, you and your father are out on the water, you are driving with the saftey laynard connected to you and for whatever reason you get thrown from the boat with the laynard so the outboard stops as it should. Now like some other brands your father would not be able to start the engine-he would be strandard and not be able to come and get you, but with an E-TEC he can start the engine and come and help you.

Cheers,

Huey.

Cheers Huey.
I had thought about it like you mentioned.
Just wasn't sure if it was meant to do it or not.
Every other device with a safety lanyard i have owned needed it to start.

Thanks for the fast reply too.

Actually, if you start the motor without the lanyard, and try to install (it is possible), the motor stops.

I know other motors (ie Honda) have spare clips installed on the control, but I prefer the Evinrude solution.

My engine will not start without the lanyard attached.  Its always been that way.  Do you think it may have been set-up incorrectly or is it a faulty switch?

I would check set-up first. It should crank. At certain times, I use mine without the lanyard and its a great feature.

Does your lanyard clip onto the keyswitch assembly or is it a separate button that needs the lanyard clip installed on it?

The 1996 and newer ignition switches are designed to have the lanyard connected to it, and will start the motor even if the lanyard clip is removed.

If you have a separate switch and clip, then it has to be installed for the motor to run.

My lanyard is beside the side mounted binnicale, its the button style.  Is there some way to wire it to work like the OP's lanyard?

Install a new style ignition switch assembly.
